The Browser
Editorial
The SLUC College Library is launching the very first issue of its official newsletter, The Browser. The purpose of this newsletter is to provide specialized information and to promote the Library’s identity as the information center of the SLUC community.
As we enter the information age, the 21st century could well be characterized as an age of “information explosion”. The emergence of the information superhighway or the Internet paved way for information to cross the boundary of time and space. As a result, more information became more useful to more people.
The need to extend this information to more people becomes the paramount concern of every individual and institution, which seeks to promote an environment where ideas are exchanged freely, and useful information are well utilized.
The College Library, being a vital support system of the university’s instruction function, recognizes the importance of keeping its clients informed of its programs, holdings, priorities and policies. This is one way of creating a more dynamic and responsive library services. Thus, The Browser was conceived.
The name Browser was adopted from the software that Internet users use to view web pages in the information superhighway or the World Wide Web. In the same way, the Browser provides library users and the SLUC community with information about the library’s operation, current holdings, news, activities, updates and accomplishments. It will be circulated twice a year, once in every semester.
As the Library seeks to improve its services to the academe, it also strives to promote its identity as an information center, and the Browser is one of its tools in accomplishing this vision.
As we enter the information age, the 21st century could well be characterized as an age of “information explosion”. The emergence of the information superhighway or the Internet paved way for information to cross the boundary of time and space. As a result, more information became more useful to more people.
In response to the challenges of the information age, the SLUC College Library is launching its own newsletter, which is called “The Browser”. Its name was adopted from the software program that enables people to view the Internet called an Internet browser or simply a browser. By using this software, people will be able to visit and view the contents of web pages of computers across the Internet giving them the necessary information they need.
In the same way, the library aims to promote itself as the information center of the university and one way of disseminating information is through a newsletter. Thus, The Browser was conceived.
It is important that the Library keeps its clients informed of its current programs, holdings, priorities as well as policies. As a means to publicize this information, The Browser becomes a very effective tool. In the same way that Library users become aware of the programs of the Library, they can suggest ways on how to improve the services of the library. This would allow the library to become more responsive to the needs of its clients.

Today, libraries are more than just book repositories. They now have collections in a variety of formats, aside from print, such as audio, video, and electronic. In this dynamic and competitive millennium, libraries have repositioned themselves as bridges from the oldness of the printed word to the newness of the electronic world. And the bridge, linking people and information, goes both directions.
